5 Self-Care Tips During Van Life

Although van life can grant you access to the most amazing places, it also has its drawbacks. You are essentially sacrificing certain aspects of your once ultra convenient house or apartment life.

At the same time, you are also working hard to maintain your now-life on the road. From planning your route to thinking about van maintenance, it can feel like a lot to handle and can be overwhelming at times which is why it's so important to do self-care. Here are five simple ways you can do #self-care while enjoying van life:

Take a LONG Hot Shower

When you are on the road, you can't really indulge yourself while taking a shower. You take a shower because you want to get clean. Usually, you won't be able to do all the extra steps like exfoliating or deep conditioning, as most vans have a limited amount of water. But you should never underestimate the power of a hot shower. I promise you, after living on the road full time, a quick 3 minute hot shower will still feel AMAZING! When Sunny and I want to indulge in a long, hot shower we will book a campsite that has showers. This typically costs around $25-$35 for the night and we’ll get every penny out with a nice, long, 15-20 minute shower.

Visit a Spa

There's nothing more relaxing than a day in the spa. Once you’ve reached your limit, going to the spa can be your reset button. Next time you’re driving through a city, look up the nearby spas and book yourself a pedicure or massage! If you’re super remote, definitely try to check out a hot spring to relax.

Workout or Take a Hike

Most of the time, you're going to be driving from one spot to the next. Other times, you're going to spend your days in the van, working. Whenever you get the chance, move your body because it is a big part of taking care of your physical and mental health.

You're already in nature so, as much as you can, do yoga, take a hike, or get your run on. Whatever workout you have in mind, go for it, even if it’s just a 5 minute stretch.

Spend Time in Your Backyard

Eventually, being cooped up in the van most times will get to you. Why not step out of the van and do something creative while you are in your "backyard"? If your backyard happens to be the beach today, then step out and have a picnic. If your backyard is the forest, maybe you can enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the fresh air. Do something you love and don’t be afraid to pick up a new hobby like drawing, meditating etc.

I'm lucky to be going on this journey with Sunny. Still, even with my significant other I try to connect with others who are into the same lifestyle as us as much as possible. The quickest way we’ve been able to meet other travelers is through van life festivals like Descend on Bend or Van Fest. I highly recommend going to an event like this because you’ll instantly make a ton of friends who all live on the road, just like you! And don’t be afraid to DM van lifers you follow on IG. If you’re in the same area as them, they may be down to meet up. We always are!

I hope these tips help you prioritize your self care while living on the road!
